Requirements: Novice, Smarts d6+, Fighting d6+
Some spend their lives poring over ancient tomes and texts, unlocking the power of magic while others spend their time becoming weapon masters without equal. The magus is at once a student of both philosophies, blending magical ability and martial prowess into something entirely unique.
As he grows in power, the magus unlocks arcana that allow him to merge his talents further. At the pinnacle of his art, the magus becomes a blur of steel and magic.
Arcane Background (Magus): Magi use Spellcasting as their arcane skill. This gives them 10 Power Points and two powers from the list below.
Available Powers: Baleful polymorph, barrier, blast, bolt, boost/lower Trait, burst, damage field, deflection, detect/conceal arcana, disguise, dispel, drain Power Points, entangle, environmental protection, fly, growth/shrink, havoc, illusion, invisibility, light/darkness, protection, shape change, smite, speed/sloth, summon ally, telekineses, teleport, wall walker, warrior's gift.
Armor Interference (Light): While wearing medium or heavy armor or using medium or heavy shields, the character's arcane skill rolls suffer a -4 penalty. He can't use abilities granted by this Edge or any Edge that has this Edge as a Requirement.
Magus Arcana: As a free action, a magus can enhance his combat prowess using the follow abilities by spending the listed Power Point cost.
Arcane Accuracy (1): Gain a +1 bonus on your next Fighting roll (max of +2).
Critical Strike (1): After getting a raise on an attack, reduce the MAP of all other actions this turn by 2 (once per turn).
Hasted Assault (1): The magus doubles his Pace this turn (once per turn).
Spellbooks: Magus use spellbooks. See spellbooks below.
Spellstrike: As a limited action, the magus channels a spell through a one handed melee weapon. He makes a single skill roll using his Fighting. This is considered an attack and arcane skill roll, treating the power as if it had the Range Limitation.
With success, the spellstrike deals weapon damage and activates the power. With a raise, the weapon gets a bonus d6 and the power's raise effects resolve as usual. Apply any modifiers for activating a power, attacking, and damaging to these rolls.
Requirements: Seasoned, Magus
The magus can spend a Benny to recover 10 Power Points.
Requirements: Seasoned, Magus
A magus can hold a wand or staff in his offhand and use it when attempting a Spellstrike.
Requirements: Veteran, Magus
Gain the following Magus Arcana.
Enchantments (3): Give the magus's weapon a 1-point Enchantment for five rounds.
Reflection (Varies): When targeted by a successful power activation, the magus may spend Power Points equal to the power's cost (including Power Modifiers) to make the caster the target instead.
Requirements: Heroic, Magus
Whenever an enemy within reach of the magus successfully casts a spell, the magus may make a free attack against them.
Requirements: Wild Card, Legendary, at least two Magus Edges
When using Spellstrike, ignore Arcane Resistance and Improved Arcane Resistance.
Magus spells are strange, complex things that fade quickly from the minds of even the most accomplished casters. For this reason, each magus maintains a spellbook with the spells he’s translated and acquired. He studies them daily, transcribing their mystical patterns onto his mind
The link to the book is far more than rote memorization—it is an arcane bond with the power and patterns within. If a magus doesn’t have access to his spellbook, he may continue to cast normally until the next sunset or sunrise (whichever comes first). After that, the magical imprint on his mind fades and he can no longer cast them
Magus may only carry one active spellbook at a time. The mountains of scrolls, magical notations, and research needed to prepare another cannot be carried with the magus and must be stored safely somewhere. It takes a week of work and 500 gp to create a replacement spellbook once the magus has access to his magical notes
When a magus takes the New Powers Edge, he chooses any two powers as usual. If he has found any spells (including scrolls) through exploration or purchase, and it is of his Rank or less, he may take one of those as a bonus third power at that time as well.
